Why AAC (M4A) is technically superior to MP3
MP3 was finalized in 1993. AAC arrived eight years later as its official successor — it is literally the format MPEG designed to replace MP3. With a more modern psychoacoustic model, AAC handles stereo imaging, sharp transients (drum hits, consonants) and high frequencies more efficiently. In blind listening tests, AAC at 128kbps typically scores about the same as MP3 at 160–192kbps.
That is why Apple bet the iTunes Store on AAC in 2003, why YouTube itself streams audio as AAC, and why every iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and AirPod decodes it in hardware — which also means slightly better battery life compared to software-decoded formats.
There is a nice bonus when converting from YouTube specifically: YouTube's audio is already AAC. Converting to M4A keeps the audio in its native codec family, minimizing generation loss — the closest thing to a "direct" download of YouTube's audio stream.
